As I prayed in regards to where I should begin in this journey, I was led to Revelation 2:4, “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.” Read in context, taking into account all of the things He had just finished praising the church for, this gives profound insight into just how important it is for God to be our first love. Giving Him worship, spending time in fellowship with Him, and keeping Him first and foremost in our hearts and minds are the things that are paramount to pleasing Him.

Being a person who enjoys words, I went exploring exactly what I was forsaking. The Greek word translated for “first” is “protos” which means: first in time or place, first in rank, honor, and influence. The Greek word for “love” in this instance is “agape”, that self-sacrificing, all-encompassing, benevolent type of love. It is also my given mission and business! More importantly than that, it is the word used for “love” in 1 John 4:8 which reads, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Needless to say He had my full attention!

The next question was how do I honor my first love? {Keep in mind, I’m sharing the answers and revelations I got during the process of seeking His Face for this journey. Your path may differ.}That question led me to the page right before that verse in my Bible. There Revelation 1:8 read, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” He, who is Love, is the First, the Last, and Everything in between!

Armed with all of this, my first area of improvement in this journey is to ensure His position as my First Love! I am to be self-sacrificing, all-encompassing, and benevolent in this pursuit. This is in no way to become a ritual or routine, merely something on a list of things to do that must be checked off. While I realize that the flesh will not always be on board, my true heart’s desire must remain. I am to give Him a place and time to be honored and to influence me at the beginning of my day, the end of my day, and at least one designated time in between.

As these are parts of my regular worship, my first steps on this journey involve securing their position in my day. Most specifically for me, I am to make these the top priority of my day. There times are to be non-negotiable and everything else is to be scheduled around them. I have learned, especially lately, that when compromises begin to be made it doesn’t take long for a slip to occur. Therefore, my time with God is to be the foundation of my day around which and upon which everything else is built!

With that in mind, my actions steps for this week are:

1. Say “Good Morning, Abba!” upon waking, joyful and thankful for the new day. {Ps. 139:18b}

2. Have prayer and meditation time before daybreak. {Ps. 5:3, Mk 1:35}

3. Have prayer time a total of three times daily: morning, noon (midday), and evening. {Ps. 55:17, Dan. 6:10}

4. Write a love note to Him once daily {Ps. 25:1, writing is how I express the things in my soul}

5. Say “Goodnight, Abba!” before falling asleep. {Ps. 63:6}

Surrendered to Him~
