For many, this marks the beginning of a new year, a time to set goals and re-evaluate priorities. While this is not the time for my new year, as I celebrate in the Spring, this is the beginning of a new fiscal year for my business and thus still marks many of the same activities. There is one area in particular that I have known for some time that I was going to have to confront, and, considering how many projects there are for me on the Kingdom Enterprise front this fiscal year, now is the perfect time to get it worked out. That one thing is my circadian rhythm.

What is a Circadian Rhythm

In very over-simplistic terms, your circadian rhythm is your internal clock. Unlike the clock on your wall, however, this clock does way more than simply mark the passage of time. Among many other things, this clock governs the releasing of the hormones that affect most, if not all, of the areas of your body. In some way or another, your circadian rhythm and how well you are attuned to it can have a major impact on every aspect of your health.

It is important to note here that, while the basic rhythm itself is typically the same for most people, the timing of it, when the cycle starts and stops, can vary from person to person. Think in terms of people who are naturally night owls or early risers. That is why it is not only important to learn about the circadian rhythm and how it affects your body overall, but to also learn about your particular rhythm and how to best function according to it.

When you sleep, how well you sleep, and how efficiently your body runs during the day all have an impact on your productivity and thus your ability to take care of your family and the ministry you’ve been assigned. I don’t know about you, but I find it almost impossible to run the race set before me when I’m out of rhythm.








Far too often when we think on these things though we are forced to do something that has been epically destroying women for years…compare ourselves to others. While this is a detrimental activity in all areas of life, in the case of your circadian rhythm it can ultimately cost you your life. One of those hormones that I mentioned earlier has in impact on the severity of your stress response, something that can contribute to hypertension and other heart issues. And that is just one example. It is therefore vital that you be your unique self in this area and learn how your internal clock and rhythm function best.

Ways to Reset Your Circadian Rhythm

Once you have determined your circadian rhythm and the optimum way to live according to it, you may find that your life is totally off balance with that optimum state. You may simply be able to start living that optimum way and fall right back into rhythm with the way your body was Created to function. If you have been out of sync a long time, however, you may need to consider something I call a reset, that is reset your life and habits to fall in sync with your circadian rhythm.

How quickly you can get this done depends on the severity to which your life is connected to that less than optimum state. Depending on the necessities in your life, you may not be able to achieve that optimum in the season you are in. It is important that you still identify these areas though so that you can be prepared as seasons change.

I, as my seasons have changed, have had to do this reset more than once in life and I have learned a few pointers I’d like to share with you:

1.If at all possible begin your reset on days when you don’t have much do. {I know for some of y’all that sounded like a joke. Just hold that pointer for the next season…I assure you there will come a time when there is at least one day where you don’t have a bunch that you must do. Just hang in there mama.}
2.Shift your bedtime BEFORE shifting your wake time. Often we have already discovered our optimum sleep length and our body is used to it. Because of this, sometimes if you change the time you go to sleep, your wake time will correct itself.
3.Don’t try to change every aspect at one time. Make your shifts slowly and in stages wherever appropriate. The last thing you want to do is shock your body…or your family for that matter…into a worse state.
